Each year the re-enrollment process for Hartfield begins in January. I would like to take this opportunity to share with you some details regarding this process, a few notes on the exciting future of our school, and the value of an independent school education.
Soon you will be receiving invitations and instruction for re-enrolling your student for the 2018-19 school year next August. This is a vital step for our planning of the new year as our class schedules, teacher contracts, and facility preparations are built off of our anticipated enrollment and growth.
There is another reason why this process is important – To ensure your spot at Hartfield for next year! The new facility addition and expansion will have a positive domino effect on every aspect of our school, but there are still other factors to the process of expanding every grade level. Even though we will have more space, some grades will still have limitations on the number of students that we can accommodate immediately. Our campus will allow us to eventually expand to 72 students in each grade, but our faculty and class sizes will grow to that over time, not overnight. Let me share with you some current elementary enrollment numbers:
- 69 K5 students going into 72 1st grade spots
- 65 1st graders going into 72 2nd grade spots
- 64 2nd graders going into 72 3rd grade spots
- 56 3rd graders going into 54 4th grade spots
- 54 4th graders going into 54 spots 5th grade spots
This same growth is true for our middle and high school classes as well- 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 12th grades that were all at capacity this year. Over the last three years we have slowly grown our capacity from K5 up and next year we will definitely have 72 in our 3rd grade. If the numbers dictate it, and we can meet the need, we may expand our 4th and 5th as well – but there is no guarantee. I encourage you to use the priority window to re-enroll so you can ensure that position!
So, why IS an independent school educational experience so important? With constant demands of a growing family, I recognize that educational expense is something that is not easy for everyone. Last year, I shared some vital statistics for our state. Did you know that in Mississippi only 13% of our population has a bachelor’s degree and only 7% have a graduate degree? College graduates in our state are the exception, not the rule! We as parents must be intentional about our children’s education. In the same breath I would implore us all to be intentional about the spiritual development of our children.
I encourage you to take the time to read a short article written by Pat Bassett, the former president of the National Association of Independent Schools. His perspective on the value of an independent school education is insightful and will serve as an affirmation of your decision to be intentional with your child’s education. So, why did you choose Hartfield and why do you go through the process of re-enrollment every spring? Simply put, because there is only one thing more important than a great education for your son or daughter- and that is having the opportunity for a great education complemented with the understanding that walking in God’s will and wisdom is the true sign of success. I’m proud that this is the mission of Hartfield.
